Dish was definitely more of a household name years back during its prime. It provided thousands of homes with satellite television, and it was able to stand out from the competition. However, that’s not all that the company does. In 2020, when T-Mobile acquired Sprint, it was agreed upon that Dish be allowed to compete in the mobile carrier market. It wanted to be the fourth major carrier trading blows with Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. In order for this to happen, Dish was given to June 14th, 2022 to cover at least 20% of the US with its signal. So, the company was working most of this year to get that up and running.
Now, Dish covers 20% of the US
Dish posted a blog post confirming that it hit the milestone. It didn’t specify the exact percentage, but it’s just important that it reached 20%. Now, Dish is another option besides Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. While this is true, it will be a while before Dish’s Smart 5G can reach the other three. Right now, Dish is still in the early stages, so you can expect some limitations. For starters, there’s a limited number of devices that can even use the signal; VERY limited. Right now, only the Samsung Galaxy S22, the Netgear 5G hotspot, and the Motorola Edge+ use the company’s signal. The S22 and the hotspot are compatible, but only the Edge+ is offered for purchase from Dish. It will most likely take years for Dish to fully flesh out its 5G service and properly trade blows with the competition. Until then, we’re going to have to look out for more early milestones from the company.
