Both carrier-locked and unlocked variants of the latest Samsung flagships are now receiving the May SMR (Security Maintenance Release) stateside. The update comes with firmware versions S908USQS2AVDC and S908U1UEU2AVDC for the two variants respectively. According to the official changelog, the devices are also getting some stability improvements, bug fixes, and feature enhancements along with this month’s SMR. As for the content of the latest SMR, Samsung has already revealed that it brings fixes for over 30 Android OS vulnerabilities. Additionally, it patches 18 SVE (Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures) items as well. SVEs are security flaws that only affect the Korean firm’s Android-powered devices. All of these bug fixes are now reaching US Galaxy S22 units. If you remember, the newest Samsung flagships were also affected by the critical Dirty Pipe vulnerability that allowed a remote attacker to take full control of your device by gaining system-level access with root privileges. Samsung patched the bug with the April SMR. But if you haven’t updated your phone in recent months, you might not want to delay things any further. You should get a notification once the OTA (over the air) update becomes available for your phone. You can also manually check for the update from the Software update menu in the Settings app.
Galaxy S22 phones will get updates till 2027
Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 series earlier this year. The devices brought much-improved hardware and expectedly saw sky-high demand all over the world. They have had much better sales figures than their predecessors. The 2022 flagships have helped the Korean behemoth post record quarterly revenue in the first quarter of the year. But it’s not just the powerful hardware that makes the Galaxy S22 phones so compelling. Samsung has also promised four generations of Android OS updates for the phones. Debuted with Android 12, they will get updates up to Android 16 sometime in late 2025 or early 2026. Additionally, they will get software updates for five years, i.e. till 2027. So you can rest assured that your new smartphone will continue getting the latest features for a long time to come.
