The December security update for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is currently available to users of the unlocked unit on AT&T’s network, SamMobile reports. The update comes with firmware version F936U1UEU1BVKB and has an OTA (over the air) download size of more than 400MB. Both the build number and the file size suggest this release has more than just the latest vulnerability fixes. However, the publication doesn’t have more information to share. Samsung also hasn’t updated its official update tracker for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 to reflect this release. We should find out soon what else the company is seeding here. Meanwhile, we already know what the December SMR contains. Samsung lists as many as 80 vulnerability fixes in its latest monthly security release. These include five critical fixes part of Google’s ASB (Android Security Bulletin). These are fixes for issues found in the Android OS and other partner components. The respective vendors of those components patch the vulnerabilities. The most severe vulnerabilities mentioned in this month’s ASB could lead to remote code execution without additional execution privileges. Some also allowed remote code execution over Bluetooth. The December SMR for Galaxy devices also contains 60 high-severity vulnerability fixes that came from Google. Some of those allowed local information disclosure. Apart from the ASB patches, Samsung patched 13 Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities as well. A couple of those were high-severity flaws in the Exynos baseband, allowing a remote attacker to disable the network traffic encryption and get sensitive information such as IMEI. Other Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities affected apps and services including Nice Catch, Samsung Settings, WindowManagerService, Phone, Contacts, and RCS.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 should get this update widely soon
The latest software update for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 should soon reach carrier-locked and unlocked units on other networks in the US. Samsung should also bring it to global markets in the coming days. The company is just getting started with its December SMR rollout. Other eligible devices such as the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy S22 series should join the party shortly. We will let you know when Samsung updates these devices to the December security patch.
