WhatsApp already offers two options when you try to delete a message. You can either delete the message for everyone or only you. The first option removes the selected message from the chat for everyone. This comes in handy when you want to delete a message that you accidentally sent to the wrong person or group. It also allows you to correct factual errors. The recipient will see that you deleted the message but not the message itself. The other option, meanwhile, only deletes your copy of the message. The recipient will still be able to see and quote it in the chat. They can even forward the message. This option exists to let you free up some storage space by clearing unnecessary chats. But if you wanted to select the “delete for everyone” option and accidentally tapped on “delete for me,” it could get pretty frustrating. This happens to the best of us. You sent the wrong message to someone and deleted your copy of it. Now you can’t remove it from the chat. This is where the new “Accidental Delete” feature comes into play. As soon as you delete a message, a toast will appear at the bottom of the screen telling you that the message has been deleted. It is accompanied by an “Undo” button. Tapping that button will restore the deleted message. As you’d expect, the button will not stay there forever. You only have five seconds to realize the mistake and correct it. That should be enough in most cases, though. You can then proceed to delete the message for everyone if that was your intention. Or maybe simply restore a message after deleting it accidentally.
