The lawsuit came from a Swiss company known as SQWIN SA. The firm alleges that Samsung Pay infringes on its patent pertaining to the electronic payments system. SQWIN SA seemingly has a patent registered in Russia, with the court citing the patent numbers. Samsung refused to comment on the development, adding that it is appealing the ruling. SQWIN SA’s initial claim was backed by the court on July 27, although it did not provide further information. This new Moscow Arbitration Court ruling specifies the number of Samsung models that are prohibited from selling in the region. However, we still don’t know the names of the devices that could potentially face a ban in the region.
This could lead to a ban on a majority of Samsung phones currently selling in Russia
Reuters quotes Russian media agency RIA saying that the ruling is yet to take effect. Meanwhile, the Moscow court said that Samsung has the right to appeal. So it’s not the end of the road for the South Korean manufacturer. Since there’s no clarification on what devices are on the court’s radar, it’s too early to speculate what this could mean for the company. However, since this litigation involves Samsung Pay, it could impact a wide range of recent Samsung devices. Samsung’s market share in Russia has diminished rapidly while the likes of Xiaomi are experiencing decent growth in the region. This has led to a comeback of sorts for some companies, including HTC, the now-forgotten smartphone manufacturer. Last year, the manufacturer launched the HTC Wildfire E2 in the region as a budget offering. More recently, Samsung launched the mid-range Galaxy M52 5G in Russia. The device packs a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a powerful Snapdragon 778G octa-core chipset. It offers 128GB of internal storage, which is expandable via microSD (up to 1TB) and 6GB of RAM. The Galaxy M52 5G offers a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 64-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 5-megapixel macro sensor. Meanwhile, the front offers a 32-megapixel single punch-hole camera. The Galaxy M52 5G also features a 5,000 mAh battery. Other exciting features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and so on.
