The company detailed “10 innovative technologies” that have “rewritten smartphone history” in a blog post just before the launch of the Galaxy S22 series. Although some of the words used are expectedly hyperbolic, there’s no denying Samsung’s role in shaping the crowded field of Android. Hardware has always been Samsung’s strong suit. But the company has also managed to complement it with effective software features. The aforementioned Super AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S flagship takes the #1 spot in Samsung’s chronological list. Let’s go through the rest in the order that they’re mentioned. Modern-day smartphones are relatively large, and Samsung can take some credit for starting off that trend in 2011 with the first-gen Galaxy Note and its S Pen stylus. Air Command for the S Pen arrived a couple of years later with the Galaxy Note 3.

In 2020, AI features made their way to the S Pen stylus (Galaxy Note 20). A year later, support for this stylus expanded to cover the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G. And as we now know, the S Pen stylus will be available with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung also discusses its built-in security solution, known as Samsung Knox, first introduced in 2013 with the Galaxy Note 3. Meanwhile, 2014’s Galaxy S5 was the first phone from the company to be water and dust-resistant. Samsung took this a step further with the Galaxy S7 in 2017, bringing IP68 certified water and dust resistance. There’s also the mention of its wireless payments system, Samsung Pay, which has grown in stature since its 2015 announcement. It’s worth pointing out that Samsung’s primary rival, Apple, was the first to launch wireless payments with Apple Pay. Moving on to 2016, the manufacturer launched the first-ever dual pixel sensor, making tremendous progress in terms of camera technology. The launch of One UI in November 2018 also gets a mention. Samsung’s first foldable in the form of 2019’s Galaxy Z Fold slots in at #8. Rounding out the list at #9 and #10 are the company’s Object Eraser feature that broke cover with the Galaxy S21 last year, and the environmental initiative aptly named “Galaxy for the Planet,” announced in August 2021. The manufacturer recently announced the use of eco-friendly materials generated via recycled marine waste with the Galaxy S22. This includes using discarded fishing nets and turning them “into a material with which to produce smart devices.”
