The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is expected to launch on May 20
The event will kick off at 8 PM local time, which translates to 2 PM CET / 8 AM EST / 5 AM PST. Qualcomm did not specifically mention either of these SoCs in its announcement, but that’s what’s expected to happen.
The timing fits, and Qualcomm likely wouldn’t host an event at this point if it doesn’t plan on announcing new chips. Not to mention that this is a ‘Snapdragon’ event. Many handsets in H2 2022 are expected to utilize the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, so… that’s almost certainly what we’re getting on May 20. As you can see, we’re only four days away from that event. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is the more interesting of the two processors. That chip will be an improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It will be manufactured by TSMC, and it’s expected to offer better thermals than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is an excellent SoC, but it can get quite toasty. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is expected to be a considerable improvement in that regard. It’s expected to offer better performance overall.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will likely be quite a popular SoC as well
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will be the company’s new mid-range SoC. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 series of chips is usually utilized by many companies for their mid-range phones. Those chips usually end up being quite powerful. We don’t really know anything about the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 at this point. Well, other than the fact it will be a 4nm processor. We’ll find out more at the event, as specific details did not leak out yet, and it’s possible they won’t at all before the event.
