The Wear OS System UI app will likely seed system improvements to the Pixel Watch via the Play Store. Google recently said that it plans to release a new Wear OS version every year as it does for Android. Its first-gen smartwatch will get updates for at least three years. These will include major Wear OS updates, as well as minor feature updates, bug fixes, and security updates. One such minor update is already rolling out and will be available out of the box for many buyers. But that isn’t all. Google will also seed other system updates to the Pixel Watch with improved features and experiences from time to time. The Wear OS System UI app appears to deliver those updates. First spotted by 9to5Google, the app itself has a day-one update available on the Play Store. Weighing 6MB in size, the new version (v1.0.84.473138617) adds a Home shortcut at the top of Quick Settings. It also brings some notification enhancements and bug fixes. According to the new report, your Pixel Watch’s screen will temporarily go black upon installing this update. You will see a “Starting” screen after some time and everything will be back to normal. You can expect many more updates for the Wear OS System UI app on your Pixel Watch in the future.
Google also offers Wear OS System UI as a watch face
Wear OS System UI is also available as a watch face on the Play Store. It is another first-party Google app for the Pixel Watch to get a watch face. A recent update for Google Photos added one too. The first-gen Google smartwatch, meanwhile, recently got a separate “Services” app that will provide improvements to sensor processing algorithms. The wearable also comes pre-installed with apps like Wear OS by Google Smartwatch, Fitbit, and Fitbit ECG among others. Note that while the official watch faces from the Pixel Watch will work on other Wear OS 3-powered smartwatches, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series, these Google apps are only available for the company’s in-house wearables, i. e. the Pixel Watch. If you’ve got the first-gen Google smartwatch, you may want to check for an update for the Wear OS System UI app.
